My book is called: White Star: A Dog on the Titanic. It is written by Marty Crisp and is 130 pages long. Its genre is historical fiction, which is fun to read, because you know the history, but read it from a different point of view. Even though it never happened, it could have been similar to something someone on the Titanic could have experienced.
There is a twelve-year-old boy named Sam Harris that is living in England with his grandparents. His mother made him go and live with them because his father died. His mother was supposed to go with him, but was to sick to go on an oversea journey. His father's dad picked him up, and took him to England. He was only supposed to be there for six months, but ended up staying for six years! When his mother finally remarries, she asks Sam to go back and live with her and her new husband, Jack. To him, going back to America seems like going to a new place, because he left for England when he was six years old. The only way he knows his mother, and kept contact with her, was her letters. Other than that, he didn't want to go home to what he called, "a stranger". His grandparents put him on the Titanic and let him stay with an old family friend, Lady Cabot. When docking for the last time before going to America, he sees a beautiful Irish setter, and finds out, after knocking heads with Robert Daniel, that the setter belongs to the owner of the Titanic, Mr. Ismay. He visits the dog in the kennel, and gives him the name Star. His best friend, Bucky, is also on board with his family, and they are glad to have each other. Sam, Bucky, and Star have some fun adventures aboard the Titanic. Although soon, at that fateful hour, the ''unsinkable'' Titanic hits an iceberg and things go downhill from there. When everyone is trying to get the women and children into the lifeboats, Sam tries to go get Star. But will he find him in time? Will he be able to get Star and himself to safety before the Titanic sinks? Will his best friend, Bucky, survive? Read White Star to find out!
The main characters are Sam Harris, Bucky Kingsbury, Robert Daniel, Lady Cabot, White Star, and Mr. Ismay. Bucky Kingsbury is Sam's best friend. He is fourteen years old, and lives on the Titanic with his family. He is tall and strong, and loves to say he can do better than everyone else. He even said that he thought they could make the Titanic better. Robert Daniel is a passenger aboard the Titanic. He is a banker who works in Pennsylvania. He has a dog that he says will be the best breed of bull dogs in America. He is a good friend to Sam on the voyage to America. Lady Cabot is Sam's ward. She is like his guardian on the boat and shares the double room with him. Sam's grandma and Lady Cabot are good friends, and Lady Cabot promised to get Sam to America safely. White Star is a loyal Irish setter. He listens to Sam, and acts as though he and Sam are meant for each other. He is a good dog and belongs to Mr. Ismay. He is supposed to be in advertisements and brochures for the White Star Line.
This story takes place in April of 1912. It starts in England and then travels to Ireland and then sets sail across the North Atlantic Ocean. It ends in America on Friday, April 19, 1912.
There are TWO main conflicts in this story. The first is that Sam has to go back to America to his mother, and doesn't want to. (Man vs. self.) The second is that the Titanic sinks and they have to find a way to get out of the boat. (Man vs. nature.) I know this because in the first, HE doesn't want to. So he is against himself. In the second, it is nature that got in the way of the boat, and they have to face the bitter cold.
The major theme in this book is: Stay True To Your Friends. In the book, Sam didn't want to leave Star behind. His best friend, Bucky, wanted him to go on a boat before he did, showing how strong their friendship really was. He never abandoned Star, even when others were set against him.
That concludes my book assessment for the month! I hope you enjoyed it, and will want to read White Star!
